For a broad and hopeful vision of human reason
The second general audience dedicated St. Thomas Aquinas
between faith and reason, but there is no separation "mutual and beneficial partnership." He said the Pope's general audience Wednesday, June 16, in St. Peter's Square, speaking of the theological method and philosophy of Saint Thomas Aquinas.
Dear brothers and sisters,
today I would like to continue the presentation of St. Thomas Aquinas, a theologian of the value that the study of his thought has been explicitly recommended by the Second Vatican Council in two documents, the decree Optatam totius on training for the priesthood, and the declaration Gravissimum educationis, which is Christian education. Moreover, already in 1880 Pope Leo Xiii his great admirer and promoter of Thomistic studies, he wanted to declare Saint Thomas the patron of Catholic schools and universities.
The main reason for this lies not only in appreciation of his teaching content but also in the method adopted by him, especially his new synthesis and the distinction between philosophy and theology. The Fathers of the Church is faced with different kind of Platonic philosophy, where we had a full view of the world and of life, including the question of God and religion. In comparison with these philosophies, they themselves have developed a comprehensive view of reality from the faith and using elements of Platonism, to answer key questions men.
